The Great Migration: Nature's Greatest Show on Earth

Every year, more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle follow the rains across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem — the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth.

The cycle begins in the southern Serengeti calving grounds, where newborn calves attract predators and create unforgettable game-viewing. As the dry season advances, the herds push north toward the Grumeti and Mara rivers, where dramatic crossings draw photographers and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world.

When to plan your visit

River crossings are most likely between July and October in the northern Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara, though nature sets the exact timing. Calving season (roughly January–March) offers intense predator action in the south. There is no single “best” month — only the experience that matches your interests.

We recommend at least four nights in the Serengeti, split between two regions if your schedule allows, plus a qualified guide who reads the herds and weather. Speak with our team to build a migration-focused itinerary around your travel dates.
